Description
From Piazza S. Martino (300 mt a.s.l.) go under a stone archway into Via Carale; on the right is the first of many fountains of pure cold water you will find along the way. From here you reach Piazza Marconi, surrounded by old buildings.
Look for the one with a fresco depicting the Visconti family coat of arms; near the bottom of the façade of the house is a large grating, indicating that there was once a prison here.
The old people say that there was also once a trap door through which the prisoners' food was lowered.
Go along Via Caglia as far as a bridge. Where the road begins to go uphill there is another fountain with cold, fresh water.
At the top of the mule-track go past the new "Palaz", and you will come to a wayside shrine of the Madonna of Re (recognisable by the wound on her forehead); walk along past the grounds of Villa Caselli as far as Bondolo.
After going through the hamlets of Crana and Casa Leone, you arrive at Casa Brencio (440 mt a.s.l.), where another shrine is visible among the vineyards. Go along past old stone buildings, and then take the path on the left, from where there is a beautiful view of the villas of Rivoria.
When you get to the little square of Rogna, go down as far as a fountain dated 1937. You then arrive at Case Bariino, where there is another shrine to the Madonna of Re. Continue down to Menogno Sopra, where there is a fine old wash-house; from here a pretty lane leads to the last uphill stretch of the walk, taking you to the Oratory of San Giulio.
The belvedere in front of the oratory invites you to stop and rest for a while. Go past the oratory across the little square and through the narrow lanes of the picturesque hamlet of Rivoria. When you get to the surfaced road, go on as far as the avenue leading to Villa Caselli. A level path follows the boundary of the villa's grounds.
Back on the mule-track, go down to Piazza XXV Aprile, where the Town Hall is. Continue along the main road, and after about 100 metres you arrive in the hamlet of Case del Secco.
From here a path leads you back to Piazza San Martino, where you started from.
