Description
The first historical mention of MASERA is in two 10th century documents: one a bill of exchange dated June 970, which states that the Bishop of Novara, Aupaldo, gave the priest Dododei of Vogogna (the feudal capital of the Lower Ossola) a plot of land situated "in loco et feudo Maxerie"("in the place and feu of Maxeria"),and the other in a document of sale dated 994.
The place-name MAXERIA refers to the silt and debris brought down by the fast-flowing mountain rivers Isorno and Melezzo, between whose banks the village lies. In ancient times this material was called "macerie", which thus gave its name to village built on it: Masera.
